Character(s): Just Yako Katsuragi, for now, but she'll likely work on roping in a few other people as she goes.
Information: As per Miss Nessie's suggestion, Yako will use the City's library's in an effort to find more information about this 'Dewaint Forest' from her dream prior to coming to Aefenglom. She'll begin her search in Undermael College, asking librarians for assistance, and then look into other libraries from there depending on where they refer her to.
no subject
The librarians will be a little bemused by the name 'Dewaint Forest,' as they don't know much at all about it. Haven't heard of it, themselves. But they'll do their best to help her find some sort of answer, pulling out catalogs and charts, old maps that they have to blow dust off of, the works. They're rather curious, themselves. So many people have been coming into the College with these peculiar questions, and they have so few answers.
One such map is one they aren't actually able to take down and bring to her - so, they bring her to it, once they've discovered what they believe she's looking for.
This map is large, taking up most of a wall with shelves on either side of it, and is framed in a glass case. Names of cities and landmarks are shown on it, although they're written in a language reminiscent of Irish Ogham - runes, like the ones in the Coven and on the charms at the human bonfire. The head archivist - a willowy, dark-haired, dark-eyed, dark-skinned woman in her 50s that introduces herself as Endya Kovind - explains that the map is perhaps 500 some years old if their dating is correct. She points out where Aefenglom would be on the map, using a long pointer, before swinging up to the Wilde.
It's far smaller, however, and she taps on the glass with her pointer: in the very center of the Wilde sits a marker in those same runes. Miss Endya can read them well enough, though. "Dewaint," she tells Yako. "Was here." (Snow mod here as your DM: Endya is indicating the space above the E in THE on the Geardagas map on the setting page, right at the river that rests there. I don't have access to an editor that will let me specify it at this time, my apologies! I'll get you an update once I do.)
They manage to find some books for her that speak of Dewaint Forest as the heart of Geardagas, and there is one that has a theory that the leylines of their continent pass through this point, but... much of the information is very sparing. Endya apologizes for this, and does offer that perhaps some of the smaller collections in Aefenglom may have more. She can reach out to them for her, to see if they would be willing to briefly part with their books that might contain relevant information. Certainly the Parliamentary Records would, as their massive library is above and below ground, but it would be hard for her to get in, without a reason to be there otherwise. Sponsorship or internship are required, or a position in the Parliament Seats themselves.
no subject
Yako will thank her profusely her for her time and honestly be awed at the map itself ... she knew this world was so much larger than this City, but it's one thing to know that and to see it all laid out like this.
"If nobody's heard of it, does that mean ... it no longer exists?"
"Can I show this to others through my watch? I think they would be interested in hearing about it."
She'll say she would very much appreciate it if Miss Endya could contact those librarians. Yako will try her best to investigate and see what she can find on the Parliament front.
For OOC purposes:
1. Whether she's granted permission to show off the map or not, I would like Yako to make a network post about this, either using the big map or a book map as a visual aid! Is this about right/can I use this image I made, or should I wait on the mod-official version?
2. Yako will be hitting up various people for further research on this topic via the Parliament front -- is it most proper to direct them to make them create their own investigation responses?
3. For the info from additional books -- should I wait on further mod response to this thread, or is it more appropriate to start a new investigation with 'Once Miss Endya has heard from the other libraries, Yako and XYZ will...'? Whatever makes things neater on the back end, I'm sure you're swamped.

Character(s): Solas
Information: Hi! I have several overdue questions, all of which Solas has been asking since arriving to the world. Sorry for the weird, specific nature of these, and I do hope I’m using this correctly!
• #1 Dreamwalking: Regaining this is his major goal and fixation at the moment (since it’s something that master divinators do I wanna make it a slow, hard-earned thing…) In the course of his extensive-as-possible Aef-based research which he’s spent the last month pursuing, what’s he likely to have learned about the dream realm and dream-walkers?
ALSO: Aef divination uses a lot of tools, right? Are there stories about particularly powerful reagents that could be used to induce/improve dream-walking? Solas would be willing to like, straight up travel across the continent and fight a giant for something like this.
• #2 The veil & the otherworld: Solas also has been looking into the veil and the otherworld. Because he created the Veil in his own world, his immediate thought here is that the veil of Aef is also artificial, which makes him very curious about what could have come before. When he looks into the origins of magic in the world, what’s the most plausible theories on it he’ll find in the accessible Aef libraries? What else does the Coven say about the otherworld?
Is it said to be possible to touch/feel/tear the Aef veil, as you can with the DA Veil?
• #3 Social conditions…: ON A DIFFERENT NOTE, Solas has also been spending time in the Outer City and questioning the residents about like, their life and their social conditions as part of the Out of the City quest. What is the state of… class tension and conflict in Aef…
How do the Outer City residents view the Inner City: do they want to be moved into the city proper, or do they want to stay where they are and have the city help defend their homes against the Cwyld? Are there low-class organisations/parties working to advocate their interests?
What scale and type of political repression is there that ordinary people will attest to when asked? Is there notable political violence? What’s the street explanation for why theatre is banned???
-
Please don’t feel overly pressured by these… I totally get that this is a lot. I don’t need in-depth answers for EVERYTHING or anything! It’s more if it’s already worldbuildy stuff that you have planned for characters to stumble across if you get my meaning. Hopefully this isn’t a too busy time for you guys and thank you for your hard work!!

• #1 Dreamwalking: Regarding the dream realm, there's very little to find, honestly - and dream-walkers, true ones, are narcoleptic and forever "between worlds," as some of the other Witches say. Never quite truly awake or truly dreaming, they live in a state of being that mixes the mind's wild imagination with reality; dream-walking is an exceptionally dangerous thing.
There are still those who study it though, and they've been very interested in hearing about the dreams those who came from the mirror experience - seeing as when they chance dream-walking, it's nothing so big. Just brief walks in the city, or into their memories, and so on. What the mirror arrivals seem to experience is a real travel to the dream realm (or realms, as some theorize - who says there isn't more than one?), which is enviable despite the fate of those who traverse too deeply into it.
As for Aef divination, indeed it does! There are potions and medicines (drinks and drugs) that help assist with this type of thing, but given the state of the world, Aefenglom practitioners tend to focus on what they can get locally rather than any wild stories and claims about this or that being "the best" for divination. They consider them old wives' tales anyway, things spread by hedge witches - practitioners of magic who either never finished their Coven training or never had it to begin with, who still use magic to the level of a Coven Witch and beyond. They're dangerous folk, or so it's said.
• #2 The veil & the otherworld: There are plenty of books on the subject, but they all have the same unifying thing: magic simply is. It's born from Talam, the world, itself, and they're simply harnessing it. Sort of like how air occurs naturally, but like, magic.
And no, as far as anyone knows, it isn't.
• #3 Social conditions…: Ah yes, class tension. While the tension is more Monster vs Humans based (and Monsters generally live in the less nice areas of the city, both inside and outside of the Wall), there's still an divide between the upper class and the lower class. The consensus in the Outer City is a bit split - the most vocal people resent the fact they're living outside of the Wall, despite the conditions that might've put them there.
A lot of them moved to the Outer City of their own volition; there's a lot of different reasons, but the most prevalent ones are a mistrust and dislike of Parliament, wanting to Bond with a Monster (and how, despite the Coven's pushing for it to be normalized, it's still stigmatized socially; the reverse goes for Monsters bonding with humans, too), or they/a loved one being infected by the Cwyld, but the infection not spreading too quickly, and they'd just really like to be away from other people.
It's about 50/50 between "not thrilled to be here, but deciding it's better than living within the isolated city walls" and "not thrilled to be here, and deciding they should fight to live in the city but with improved conditions/normalization".
Mhairi Ainsley, Nessie's Bonded, does meet with those in the Outer City who try to organize and advocate for better conditions fairly often to try and help them out; she's notably more proactive than her predecessor like this. Nessie herself sometimes visits, but she's generally more based in the Coven and, when she does visit the Outer City, is usually there to check on how medicines are working or not working, to see if anyone would like to try advanced (and experimental) medical techniques, and etc.
Onto the next. For political repression, only votes within the city count towards anything; essentially, while Aefenglom will take care of its Outer City residents, they forfeited their say in city politics when they left the safety of the Bright Wall. The Outer City is generally fairly calm on the political violence spectrum too, but the Inner City is a little different: while things have been getting better, parties who support Monster/Bonding rights and parties who are against those do clash. Such disputes are usually dispelled as quickly as possible, with Aefenglom's guards monitoring most areas with a keen eye...
Most areas. They're less attentive in the Harbor District, the Aristocratic District, and the Western Residential District (where the majority of the Monsters live).
In a little more lighthearted news, there are a few explanations on the street for theater banning! "A wizard did it" is the most truthful and also widest circulated explanation. "Parliament just doesn't like to have fun" is another. Fortunately, the theater ban is relatively new (it's only been about six-ish years), so there isn't anything too wild explanation-wise out there.

Character(s): Francel de Haillenarte
Information:
Starting in early July and onward, Francel's main objective is to gain access to Parliamentary Records.
He's interested in learning, well, basically everything about the history of the city, hence his desire to resume his position at Undermael College — for the purposes of this investigation, I assume he spent some of his time in May reading on the job and gathering information similar to what Kurapika and Waver discovered. Now that he's working in the college again, he's going to continue trying to do some research. Since he's rather obviously a dragon at this point, I don't expect him to necessarily be hired for an apprenticeship at Parliament (though if he's offered one, he'll take it up); however, he will try to suss out which professors at the College are members of Parliament, and he'll do his best to try and obtain clearance to visit the Records.
Presumably there's a lot of Ishgardian flattery involved in this. Maybe he tries to appeal to the academic's ego, impressing upon them his interest in the legislative history of the city, or a particular interest in their field. Perhaps he goes on about how he wants to emulate the sociopolitical landscape of Aefenglom in his homeland. He'll flirt with a member of Parliament if he has to! ...Uh, within reason, anyway.
Assuming he can get access to the records (I get it if he doesn't!), and that he's reading as much as he can at Undermael, often taking out books when he can, he's looking for information about the following:
There's no rush on any of this, of course! This is a lot, and frankly, I was planning to save it for mid-July but got ahead of myself.
07/07 EDIT: Sorry, one more thing! Following this conversation with Cain, Francel will also be looking into any mention of this supposed expedition to Dewaint Forest involving Anaïs Thrush and Oliver Moore. I have no idea what he'll find!

2. If it's just the City Guard, what can he learn about the City Guard? Comprised of both humans and monsters. Many members are volunteers with combat experience, though the founding force are a lot of military officers from when the Aefenglom military was disbanded to better focus on combating the Cwyld. Captain Swain Kershaw is the primary head of the City Guard.
3. Has there ever been a force organized specifically to combat or investigate the Cwyld? 07/03 EDIT: Oh, I just realized this might be the Wilders? History on that if applicable too, please! Yes, i's the Wilders. Put together some 100-150 years ago - time is a construct that is only loosely tracked by the people of Geardagas - in response to a need for volunteers to help combat and research the expansion of the Wilde and the threat of the Cwyld. The creator was the head of the Coven at the time and their Bonded Monster, and they've since expanded into a semi-separate branch of the Coven that specializes in the Cwyld.
4. I'm assuming that the information on the Cwyld page is roughly analogous to what he might find in the library about the Cwyld. Is there anything special about the Cwyld that he might learn at Parliament? Parliament will not be teaching anything about the Cwyld to anyone at this time.
5. Have there ever been moments leading to widespread civil unrest, or political turmoil? For example, has a Coven head ever been deposed? Have members of Parliament ever been assassinated? I... look, basically he's searching for dark shit in Aefenglom's history. Yes, though the history of Coven heads and Parliament members is a little harder to locate than the greater history of the continent. Wars have been waged across Geardagas, the last of which being some 300 odd years ago by their sovereign tyrant, King Serwyl da Uathmar. da Uathmar meaning the dreadful. He sought to rule all of Geardagas with Aefenglom as his seat, before the city united to depose him and his heirs from the throne. Many, many people died needlessly, and many of them on small and large leyline alike.
The energy that came about from the war, the deaths as well as people with ill intentions using the power of the leylines, could very well have weakened and tainted the leylines they fell upon.
A good example would be the Coven destroying King Serwyl's castle and taking back the land. They already resided on the grounds because the Looking-Glass House has... well, always been there, after all, so they destroyed the castle and took a part of it for their use while distributing the rest to the city itself. Some of that land now lies outside the Wall, but regardless they worked to cleanse it with more positive magic, nourishing the growth of plantlife to repair the Bond Aefenglom has with its leyline.
6. Can he get access to the published research notes of the first Witch to forge a Bond with a Monster? No.
7. What kind of information can he find on the history of Bonding? Is there any hint that Bonding might be dangerous? None, at least that is accessible.
8. Generally, what can he learn about the Looking-Glass House in the Coven? The history of the mirrors is a little... fuzzy, but it's the only place like itself that they know of. There are no other places in Geardagas reminiscent of the Looking-Glass House. And as far as they know, the House has existed for as long as the Coven has, under its various names and in its different forms. And the concept of the Coven has been around for a very, very long time now.
9. Generally, what can he learn about the history of the Coven, and of Parliament itself? The current iteration of the Coven has been around for about 300 years, give or take, to give him some point of reference. A little longer than the Parliament has as its current form - the Parliament was named as such when the people of Aefenglom deposed their sovereign tyrant King Serwyl da Uathmar and his heirs.
But there are many theories about the House that scholars have had over the years. It was a gift from the Fae; it was a gift from the Sisters; it was created to worship a long-dead god, the Sisters, the world itself; it was used to channel the leyline that Aefenglom sits on. No two people will agree on anything, and there are actual published debates over this.
Of particular note is that, about 300-350 years ago, the Looking-Glass House was owned by the sovereign family and overseen by the Coven on the castle grounds. The castle was, effectively, built up around it as opposed to the House having been built afterwards.
10. Have there ever been other forms of government in Aefenglom? Monarchy? Theocracy? He loves monarchy and theocracy. See above!
11. What can he find about religion in Aefenglom? Aefenglom itself has a large population of agnostics and atheists. The worship of the Sisters (the moons) and/or the Stars as deities is common. There is evidence of a dead pantheon in ruins across Geargadas; the worshiped appear to be things represented in the world (seasons, rivers, etc). There is also the Circle of the High Queen, a group dedicated to the worship of the Fae's High Queen (even though no one has seen her in 300 years). Various small cults also pop up occasionally, or attempts at religious movements, but they typically are short-lived or live in obscurity.
12. How many members of Parliament are also Witches? A lot, no exact number. Not all of their Bonded are members of Parliament however.
13. Have Parliament and the Coven had any significant disagreements with regard to magic or the use thereof? A lot, probably too many to keep track of. Speaking to any member of either will net many rumors and old feuds.
Parliament has no accessible records of the expedition into Dewaint Forest.

Character(s): Yako Katsuragi
Information: Following this conversation with Eren, Yako will look into what she can find out about two witches that died during an (alleged) expedition to Dewaint Forest: Anaïs Thrush and Oliver Moore!
Primarily she'll be doing so by:
1: asking Yvette Tressa, the Witch who was leading the first Smugha Cave expedition, to see if the Wilders keep any records of previous expeditions
2: asking Miss Nessie if either name is familiar to her, and mention briefly that it's come up in the context of Dewaint Forest
3: asking Ser MacAlpine if they've ever heard of Sully Stitcher and an expedition to Dewaint that's gone sideways like that
no subject
2) Miss Nessie thinks she has, but says she'll have to double-check to be sure - and that is a Process, considering the number of records to look through.
3) Ser MacAlpine has heard of the Dewaint expedition - was, in fact, a child when the expedition came to an end. Lasted about two years. If this Sully Stitcher was a member of the expedition, they've never heard of them. (If Yako knows/explains that she's a Monster, they'll ruefully point out that makes sense; Monster names aren't often published in these sort of situations.) They do know of the two "survivors," and what few results the expedition itself brought. The best result was, perhaps, the fact that trips out to the Wilde proper, and attempts to get into the heart of it, were from then on left to the people trained to survive it better.
no subject
In any case, as far as the conversation with Ser MacAlpine goes, she would have indeed mentioned Sully being a Monster and regretfully agree that not including monsters on the records checks out. Yako looks a bit worried about that, but she'll go on to ask Ser MacAlpine for some clarification: what do they know about the two "survivors" and what the expedition found? She's heard at least Moore has surviving family still in the city, bonded to a Puca -- has Ser MacAlpne ever spoken to her?

Character(s): eren jaeger
Information: if it hasn’t been done yet, I’d love for eren to pick up where yako left off in the last investigation he gave info to her for, regarding the crazy exposition to dewaint!
1. Would Eren be able to seek out Georgie about those records of the expedition?
2. Would he be able to find Alissa Moore and have a chat with her? He has a few classes he goes to the coven for, blocks and mind strengthening to keep his memories out of his bonds, that sort of thing. If so, he’ll ask around until he finds her, and would ask for a chat!

1. He would be, at this point, with any inquiries about the boy pointing to a sullen young man, short as his hat is tall, found sulking about the garden areas of the Coven these days. Apparently, they whisper, his experiment hadn't gone so well, and he'd been put in a rut as a result. But he ought t'be fine otherwise.
A little huffy about why anyone'd want to look at those old things -- ah, he has the most respect for them of course, as a keeper so to speak of such sacred knowledge not befit for the public's eye, lest they panic or whatever it is the common rabble does -- but clearly interested in being the interest of a Dragon, even if this one seems kind of grumpy. No, most Dragons tend to be (he very much outwardly reminds himself), it's part of their nature.
What would he like to know? Specifics? Generalizations? Stories? Fun facts? Georgie'll gladly assist if it'll get his mind off his ruined debut, see.
2. He can. Alissa Moore, he finds, shares some of his classes -- as a teaching assistant in some Abjuration course in particular, helping those Bonded with what troubles they may encounter mental wise. Her Puca, an overly fluffy individual who clings to Alissa and doesn't seem the least bit aware of anything around herself. For quick descriptions' sake:
Alissa Moore, 5'6, on the plumper side. A kind, round face with brown eyes and brown hair. Likes to stylize her Coven robes with flower embroidery that sparkles and shines. Her Puca is a little shorter than her, with floppy brown ears and enough fluff that she doesn't seem to need clothing for any level of Victorianesque decency and instead accents herself with flower-shaped jewelry. Very nice legs, which she always has crossed proudly on display.
Alissa wouldn't mind being talked to, though, especially by someone like a student. Her and Maddie (the Puca, apparently) were just about to head to the library for studies, if he'd like to join them.

1. eren would like to know specifics! firstly, about his experiment gone wrong. tell him of that first, and then afterwards, he’d like some records on any expeditions to dewaint forest, including the one that went horribly wrong. anything that has happened repeatedly, or before that time, or anything newer? any clue on what the cywldite there looked like beyond “monstrous”? the path they took to get there too would be of his interest.
2. oh no, they’re cute 😭 i appreciate the thought put into their description so much mods, thank you!!! eren will of course, join them, and begin with a question once they’ve had a seat for themselves: anything she could tell him about her grandpop, oliver?

Information: as per darrus’ suggestion, eren’s here to get an audience with one of the strange dreaming folk to track down anything that could connect the dreams they have to their arrival, to dewaint, to faes and the like. how may we proceed?
no subject
Aerianna is the easiest to find around the Coven; she took it upon herself years ago to care for the Dreamers, bringing them meals and carrying messages for them. They often forget to eat, you know, and do basic things like that. Heads in the clouds and all. She's willing to chat, as long as he doesn't mind walking and talking - she's got things to do, of course, and her four hands are usually busy with something. What is it that he wants to ask them? She can, of course, attempt to get him an audience, but- well, they aren't exactly easy to speak to, those Dreamers, hopefully he knows what he's in for. Their minds aren't wholly on this plane anymore, she thinks, it makes being Bonded to one a very strange experience.

eren would like to see how far the dreams the mirrorbound have been having connect to a single point and which that is, more than happy to use himself as a test pig, since he’s already sticking his nose more into what the dreams offer than the actual real world. is there something deeper involved it could be (trying) to tell them? why them and not the rest of the city, did it funnel down after the first few dreams? does this connect to the mirrors? something he can unlock perhaps to delve further into them as a whole?
