There are natives that live outside the Wall this way, and of course there's the slums flushed right against the Wall itself. The further out one goes, the more afflicted by the Cwyld many of the people there are, with homes close to the Wall becoming shacks and shanties the further out. Farms and outposts allow for farmers and traders to sustain and trade, and there are teams of hunters with the specific job of going out to find uninfected game to bring back to the city.
New arrivals are discouraged from doing this, but it's not impossible. Shades are attracted to activity, especially of a magical persuasion, and especially in the area generally known as no man's land - the stretch of land between the northern side of Aefenglom and the Wilde. While Shades do dwell and prowl outside of the Wilde, leaving one at risk of attack no matter where their home is made, they often take shelter there, and the Cwyld has a high concentration in the sprawling, dark wilderness beyond.
