As predators, they certainly can be hostile towards other animals... but so long as they're well-fed, they aren't the type of animals that hunt unnecessarily. They can't really afford to. As for the latter question, yes! He'll get a sense of their intentions/feelings most clearly, so verbal communication's out, but pairing that with body language should suffice as a start.
